Zamboanga City tops LGUs with highest daily number of active COVID cases

ZAMBOANGA CITY – This city topped the latest list of local government units (LGUs)  with the highest daily number of active COVID-19 cases, according to the May 12, 2021 study of the UP OCTA Research.

Zamboanga City recorded 151 active cases daily from May 5 to 11, an increase of 47 percent compared to the previous week. This city’s figure is significantly higher than the 78 daily active COVID-19 cases in Baguio City which is second in the list.

Zamboanga City rating is also significantly higher than the 35 percent of Puerto Princesa City which is in ninth place with 60 active COVID cases recorded daily.

This city and Cagayan de Oro City are the only Mindanao cities in the new OCTA Research list with the highest number of COVID-19 cases. Cagayan de Oro City is seventh with 773 COVID-19 cases as of May 11, based on City Health Office records. Zamboanga City has 1,999 active COVID cases as of May 10, Monday.

Zamboanga City was placed under Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ) from May 8 until May 14.  

Meanwhile, Cagayan de Oro Mayor Oscar Moreno is asking the National Interagency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases to elevate the quarantine status of the city from MGCQ to GCQ.

Other cities in the list are Calamba,  73 cases; Tuguegarao, 70; Antipolo, 67; Bacoor, 65; Cagayan de Oro,  62; Bacolod, 60; Puerto Princesa, 60; Batangas City,  57; Angeles,  57; Dasmariñas,  55; Imus, 52; General Trias, 44; and Cainta, 41.
