Salute to our nurses!
International Nurses Day is observed around the world on May 12 to mark the contributions nurses make to society.
The annual observance commemorates the birth of Florence Nightingale in 1820, the foundational philosopher of modern nursing.
Nightingale first gained fame by leading a team of 38 nurses to staff an overseas hospital of the British army during the Crimean War in the 1850s.
International Nurses Day was established by the International Council of Nurses in 1974 to highlight the important role nurses fulfill in health care.
