GAB allows VisMin Cup Mindanao Leg to proceed

The Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup was given the go-signal by the Games and Amusements Board to hold its Mindanao Leg on May 30, weeks after the second phase of the upstart league due to a game-fixing controversy that marred the recent Visayas Leg.

GAB chairman Baham Mitra said the government body for professional sports took into consideration the swift action of the league officials in the aftermath of the incident where players of the Siquijor Mystics and ARQ Builders-Lapu-Lapu City made deliberate attempts to miss their shots during a game last month in Alcantara, Cebu.

"We are grateful to the league's officials for their sincerity to undertake the needed reforms for the protection and welfare of professional basketball, the players, and the public," said Mitra.

The league is set to release its findings which were made by a three-man independent body composed of a longtime administrator, a veteran coach and a FIBA rules expert.

League officials led by chief operating officer Rocky Chan also submitted joint affidavits to the GAB’s Anti-Illegal Gambling Unit through the Alcantara Police.

VisMin expelled the Mystics along with their players and coaches from the league while handing fines and suspensions to some members of the Lapu-Lapu.

But the league also reinstated several players, namely the Mystics’ Miguel Castellano and Michael Sereno and Lapu-Lapu’s Rendell Senining, who was initially banned for the rest of the Visayas Leg.

The approval of the Mindanao Leg is also on the condition that other requirements are met by the league.

"The holding of Mindanao Leg, which will strictly adhere to the ‘No License, No Play’ policy, is conditioned on the submission of the regulatory requirements, such as health screening, drug testing, and related documents, as well as on continuing adherence to protocols and strict supervision of the games," said Mitra.

The Visayas Leg came to end Sunday when KCS Mandaue stunned MJAS-Zenith Talisay City in a best-of-three finals, with guard Ping Exciminiano named as the series Most Valuable Player.
