The need for an upgrade of the airport was discussed in the March 6 meeting of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) Board.

The meeting was attended by Department of Transportation Secretary and MCIAA Board Chairman Arthur Tugade.

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, who is a member of the MCIAA Board, proposed to upgrade the island airport in a resolution.

“Obviously the need of Bantayan Island is not for a community airport, being a tourist destination in itself. We have so many beautiful resorts, beautiful beaches and in fact ngayon palang, ang dami-dami nang pumupunta doon,” Garcia said in a report by the province’s news portal Sugbo News.

The upgrade may be done in the first quarter of next year.

The MCIAA’s engineering department disclosed that the last upgrade only extended the length of the runway and not the width.

The current width of the airport is 18 meters, which is the least required for community airports.

According to Tugade, commercial airports have a standard runway width of at least 30 meters and they must have an air transportation control tower.
