Mothers received roses and vegetable bouquets at community pantries set up in Manila and Quezon City during Mother’s Day.
Women’s group Gabriela honored mothers on Sunday, May 9, by offering vegetable bouquets for mothers.
“With the rise of community pantries all over the country as a response to insufficient response from the government, Gabriela didn’t forget to honor our mothers on their very special day,” the group said in a Facebook post.
“[Community] pantries are like mothers: givers, nurturers, providers of nutritious meals, and the primary caregivers when someone is sick in the family,” it added.
Gabriela called on President Duterte to immediately release the P10,000 cash aid for poor Filipino families as “the best tribute for Filipino mothers.”
Meanwhile, Defend Jobs Philippines put up a community pantry in Sampaloc, Manila to distribute roses, meals, canned goods, rice, fish, and vegetables to mothers.
The group said the goods came from the gathered donations of Kapatid and detained activist Reina Mae Nasino’s mom and grandmother of Baby River, Marites Asis as a sign of their gratitude to the people who helped and supported them.
Mother’s Day, celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May, aims to honor mothers, motherhood, maternal bonds, and highlight the influence of mothers in society.
