World No. 1 James de los Santos continued with his winning ways as he pocketed three gold medals in a span of five days to improve his collection to 18 this year in the E-Kata tournaments.
The 30-year-old de los Santos ruled the third leg of the Budva Winner-Adria Cup last May 5, and last Sunday he topped the first edition of the Euro Grand Prix and the fourth leg of the Katana Inter-Continental League.
Overall, the former national team member now has a total of 54 gold medals won since he joined the online meets last April 2020 when face-to-face events here and abroad were prohibited because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m very happy that I’ve won two on the same day,” said de los Santos as he received the results of the Euro Grand Prix and Katana Inter-Continental last Sunday as posted by Sportsdata – the official webpage of the World Karate Federation (WKF).
“I know that if I want to stay on top, I need to work hard everyday. I need to keep training and try to improve. My goal is to keep that No. 1 spot in the world ranking, and win more medals.”
In the Budva Winner tournament, de los Santos defeated American world No. 3 Alfredo Bustamante in the final.
As for the Euro Grand Prix and Katana Inter-Continental, de los Santos won against world No. 2 Matias Moreno Domont of Switzerland in the final round of both online events.
The three gold medals he won will give de los Santos world ranking points.
So far, de los Santos leads the e-kata male seniors category with 26695.00 points after 1550 points were added to his total for winning the third leg of the prestigious SportData e-Tournament World Series 2021.
Aside from the 18 gold medals, de los Santos has also two silver medals so far this year, as he finished second in the third leg of the Adidas USA Karate Open last month and in the first Arawaza Cup last week.
