CEBU CITY – A private hospital here has expressed support to its two doctors who are facing criminal charges for the death of Barili, Cebu Mayor Marlon Garcia.
Chong Hua Hospital (CHH) said the findings of the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office indicting Dr. Elfleda Hernandez and Dr. Yvonne Bettina Montejo for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide “is not unexpected in these extraordinary times.”
“The indictment is not a finding of guilt but only a confirmation of the opportunity given by the legal process for the attending physicians to prove the quality care they have given to their patient,” CHH said in a statement.
Garcia died last September at CCH where he tested positive for COVID-19. The cause of death due was to “septic shock secondary to catheter-related blood stream infection, ventilator associated pneumonia.”
The Garcia family blamed the two doctors for turning down the request of the late mayor to discharge him.
In the complaint filed by the late mayor’s wife Jima, the prolonged stay of her husband in the hospital led to his deterioration and demise.
The CHH said it is respects the decision of the Garcias to file charges.
“We continue to respect the Garcia Family’s quest for answers and maintain our compassion for the deceased public servant and the bereaved family members without diminishing our support, concern, and care for our doctors,” Chong Hua Hospital said.
The hospital added: “Our doctors still have faith in our justice system, and they will continue to explore all legal remedies to prove their innocence.”
