Senator Panfilo M. Lacson on Thursday advised Police Lt. General Guillermo Eleazar to prioritize internal cleansing at the Philippine National Police (PNP) when he takes over the law enforcement organization as its new chief starting Saturday.
Lacson, a former PNP chief himself, said Eleazar should instill discipline and that any hint of double standard would negate all his efforts to improve the PNP.
Eleazar, according to Lacson, should lead the PNP by example as the top post would certainly face two temptations: power and money.
Lacson, chairman of the Senate national defense and security committee, said President Duterte made a good pick in choosing Eleazar to replace PNP Chief Debold Sinas who is mandatorily retired starting Saturday.
“Aside from being the most senior, his long experience as a hardworking police officer makes him eminently qualified to lead the police organization especially during these challenging times,’’ he pointed out.
Senate President Vicente C. Sotto III said he sees Eleazar as the best choice and would follow the footsteps of Lacson as PNP Director General.
Lacson was the PNP chief during the Estrada administration.
