Male cop, 31, from Central Luzon dies of COVID-19


A 31-year old policeman from Central Luzon died of complications after being infected by the coronavirus. He was the 57th fatality of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Police Lt Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, commander of the Administrative Support for COVID-19 Task Force (ASCOTF), said the Police Non-Commissioned Officer died on May 4 after a failed bout to defeat the virus.

The PNP recorded a fast death rate in the organization since the upsurge of COVID-19 cases in March this year. It was also the time when the PNP recorded the highest infection in one day with ore than 300 new cases. Also in the middle of the March, the PNP isolation and medical facility at Camp Crame were swarmed with newly-infected personnel.

Based on the data of the PNP Health Service, a total of 20,616 PNP personnel have been infected since last year. Of the figure, a total of 1,641 of them are considered active cases.

PNP personnel have been in the frontline of implementation of quarantine rules since March last year. Most of the reported infections are work-related.
