It’s time to welcome a new MCU family!

The year 2020 was a bit of a slump for superhero movie fans with the absence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) on the big screen. While the stories of Marvel superheroes Wanda Maximoff, the Falcon, and Bucky Barnes kicked off the year right for fans, we have to admit that we badly needed some action-packed moments from the MCU beyond just what streaming sites have available.

And it seems that prayers of MCU fans have been answered with the release of the trailer of the Phase 4 of the much loved movie franchise. Starting with moments of the past three phases of the MCU, the trailer presents its latest offering, and more.

Among the bombs dropped by the trailer is the first look to the much-awaited film “Eternals,” featuring a new wave of superhero team fans will surely root for. Here’s what we know so far.

What is it about?

Before the screen adaptation, Marvel fans first enjoyed the “Eternals” as a comic book in 1976. The comic book tells the story of a “race of god-like beings locked in a millennium-old conflict with the less evolved Deviants and their originators, the Celestials. Each Eternal has watched civilizations burgeon and die from their domain of Olympia. They are immortals blessed with strange, sometimes monstrous, powers.”

It looks like the movie will stick close to the gist of the comic book, only that the movie will take place in the post-“Endgame” universe, according to Marvel Studios. The film’s synopsis says that for so many years, the Eternals have been living on Earth in incognito, not until a catastrophic event forces them to come out of the shadows to fight mankind’s most ancient enemy, their darker counterpart, the Deviants.

Who is directing it?

After the success of her films “The Rider” and “Nomadland,” Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhaé makes her MCU debut by directing the “Eternals.”

The director puts her unique style on the film, an aesthetic that parallels her treatment for the movie “Nomadland.”

“I shot exactly the way I wanted to shoot,” the director also told The Hollywood Reporter. “On location. A lot of magic hours. Three-hundred-sixty degrees on the same camera as I did on ‘Nomadland.’Same rigs.”

Who is playing who?

Saying that the movie’s ensemble is stellar is an understatement. Leading the pack are actresses Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena and Salma Hayek as the spiritual leader Ajak. Joining them are “Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as the cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos,” as well as, “Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as the aloof loner Druig, and Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman.”

What to look forward to?

The “Eternals” is set to make history in the MCU with its diverse characters. The films is set to introduce the franchise’s first gay plot with the storyline of character Phastos. Another character to watch out for is Makkari, MCU’s first deaf superhero.

When is its release?

According to the latest MCU Phase 4 trailer, the “Eternals” is set to premiere on Nov. 5, 2021, a year later its supposed release. Whether it is going to have a theatrical release or to be streamed via Disney+ is yet to be confirmed due to the ongoing global pandemic.
