IM Quizon seizes share of lead in Asian Zonal

International Master Daniel Quizon outlasted FIDE Master Pitra Andyka of Indonesia in 65 moves of a Sicilian Defense to seize a share of the lead with IM Mohamad Ervan after three rounds of the Asian Zone 3.3 Chess Championships Monday, May 3.

Quizon, 16, registered his third straight victory that kept him at the helm alongside Ervan, another Indonesian who stayed unscathed after defeating Michael Gotel.

Quizon and Ervan are battling in the fourth round at press time for the solo lead.

At close second were a group of four pursuers with 2.5 points headed by IM Michael Concio, Jr., who drew with IM Yoseph Theolifus Taher of Indonesia in just 17 moves of yet another Sicilian duel.

Also in that pack were Taher and FMs Lye Lik Zang of Malaysia and Siddharth Jagadeesh of Indonesia.

Filipino Grandmaster Darwin Laylo halved the point with IM John Marvin Miciano to lead a big group of two-pointers at seventh spot.

This nine-round tournament stakes two slots to the 2021 World Cup slated Aug. 1-28 in Minsk, Belarus.
