3 life lessons Rabiya Mateo learned from her mom

Our Miss Universe Philippines 2020 dedicates Miss U competition as Mothers’ Day gift to her Mama

All eyes are set on this year's Philippine representative for the Miss Universe competition—Iloilo native, Rabiya Mateo.

Aside from her beauty, personality, and charm, another remarkable trait that people love about her is her love for her parents, especially, her mom. It’s no secret that the 24-year-old beauty queen grew up without her father, and was raised by her single mom Christine Mateo. She even dedicated her win and crown to her mother and late grandmother.

And now that she’s competing for one of the biggest competitions of her life as a beauty queen, Rabiya again dedicates this next chapter of her life to her mother.

In an interview during the Lazada x Miss Universe zoom party held on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, Rabiya shares with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle the three most important lessons her mom which she will bringing with her in this upcoming international beauty pageant.

  1. Have a humble heart

“She’s my mom, so she gave me a lot of advice,” she says. “One great thing that I remember is that, she told me to have that humble heart. That regardless of what happens, I need to see this as an opportunity for me, because things can go differently than what is expected. And once you have that humble heart, you know in yourself that you are not perfect, but you are there for a reason, for a purpose.”

2. Listen to the right people

“She would always remind me that I need to listen to the people who matter the most,” she continues. “People who really want me to win, people who really want me to be the best version of who I am.”

3. Always pray to God

“Sometimes you know, the voices in the world are so much louder than who you want to be,” she tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “So, sometimes it confuses you. But I realized that every time I meditate and I talk to God, I have clear vision of what I want this dream to become.”

She then openly expressed her love for her mom. “I really love my mama,” she says. “She's a single parent and Miss Universe is actually near Mother's Day. So, so I hope that it's also my gift to her. I offer this fight, this biggest fight of my life to make my mama proud.”

Meanwhile, on several interviews, the licensed physical therapist openly admitted that she’s not holding any grudges against her father and is hoping that the Miss Universe competition will open an opportunity for her to find her dad, whom she believes is currently residing in the US.

This year's Mothers' Day in on Sunday, May 9 while this Miss Universe coronation night will be on Sunday, May 16.
