A 25-year-old person with disability (PWD) perished in a fire that razed a residential area in Makati City on Monday night (April 27).
Supt. Ian Guerrero, Bureau of Fire Protection-Makati (BFP-Makati) chief, identified the victim as Jerimiah “Berdo” Dizon.
“The victim’s mother, who is a senior citizen, tried to carry him but he was too heavy. She was forced to leave him on his bed,” he said.
“Berdo was mentally disabled, according to his mother. And his room was located on the second floor of the house.”
Based on the investigation of the BFP-Makati, the fire started from an old house on Sacramento Street in Barangay Olympia, Makati.
It reached first alarm at 7:14 p.m. The alarm level was then raised to a third alarm at 7:23 p.m.
BFP-Makati declared fire out at 8:15 p.m.
After the blaze, firefighters found the charred body of the victim on his bed.
“We quickly raised it to a third alarm because the house was made of combustible materials. It’s mostly wood,” said Guerrero.
“This wooden house was built around the 1960s or 1970s. It is very old. And the street is super narrow, making it very difficult for our fire trucks to access the location,” he added.
Guerrero said around five families were affected by the blaze, adding that the damage caused by the fire was around P300, 000.
Arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
