Filipino scientist named as ASEAN-ROK 'Science, Technology and Innovation Pioneer'


A Balik Scientist awardee has been named as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)- Republic of Korea (ROK) Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Pioneer.

In a Facebook post shared by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), it was announced that Dr. Lawrence A. Limjuco, the 2020 Balik Scientist Awardee, received the Award for Excellence in STI.

In that social media post, the DOST-Balik Scientist Program extended its felicitations to Limjuco, a former research professor in Myongi University and research fellow at the National Research Foundation of South Korea.

"Our warmest congratulations to our 2020 Balik Scientist Awardee Dr. Lawrence A. Limjuco for being awarded as the ASEAN-ROK STI Pioneer!,” the post read.

The Ateneo de Davao University School of Engineering and Architecture noted that Limjuco’s research interest includes polymeric composite membranes and materials science for energy and environmental remediation applications.

Limjuco earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Ateneo de Davao University. He then pursued his integrated Master of Science/Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Energy Science and Technology in Myongji University, Yongin, South Korea as an international student scholar, the Ateneo de Davao University said.

The awarding ceremony was held on Thursday, April 22.

The ASEAN-ROK Award for Excellence in Science, Technology and Innovation is an annual award established to recognize the academic and professional achievements of promising, early-career scientists and engineers of ASEAN nationality, the DOST noted.

The award is open to professionals pursuing careers in any field of natural sciences and engineering.

The award recipient has to meet following requirements:

A citizen of an ASEAN Member State;

Currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Korea; or

A professional whose completion of a doctoral program is less than five years and has significant research collaboration experience such as post-doctoral programme with Korea; and

No record in the past two years of receiving an award organized or supported by ASEAN, in the field of science and engineering.
