Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the Word of God who was with God in the beginning. As the only Son, he is also the Heir; the Father has given everything to him. He has the power to judge and to give life. As he proceeds from the Father, he knows and speaks about heavenly things. He speaks the word of God and this word is life-giving.
Faith in Jesus enables us to participate in the eternal life with God. In his priestly prayer at the Last Supper, Jesus declares, “This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ” (Jn 17:3). Jesus shares this eternal life with those who believe in him and live by his word.
In moments of confusion, when our faith is sorely tested, let us confess with Peter: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God” (Jn 6:68-69).
GOSPEL • Jn 3:31-36
The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy. For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit. The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.
