269 quakes in Taal Volcano posted in last 24 hours

There were 269 volcanic earthquakes recorded in Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Friday, April 2.

In its latest bulletin, the 269 volcanic earthquakes included 219 episodes of volcanic tremor with a duration of one to 37 minutes.

"Activity at the main crater consisted of weak emission of steam-laden plumes from fumarolic vents that rose ten meters," the Philvolcs said.

The state seismology bureau said that alert level 2 remained hoisted at the area.

It reminded the public that, at alert level 2, "sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas” within the Taal Volcano Island.

It reminded the public that entry in Taal Volcano Island, Taal’s permanent danger zone, especially the vicinity of the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure is strictly prohibited.

“Local government units are advised to continuously assess and strengthen the preparedness of previously evacuated barangays around Taal Lake in case of renewed unrest,” Phivolcs said.

The Phivolcs also advised civil aviation authorities to inform pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano "as airborne ash and ballistic fragments from sudden explosions and wind-remobilized ash may pose hazards to aircraft."
