Health Secretary Francisco Duque III on Monday night, March 29, said there has also been an increase in the healthcare utilization rate with the surge in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases.
“With the increase in cases, there has also been an increase in the healthcare utilization rate at the regional and provincial level including the highly urbanized and independent component cities, as well as in the ICU utilization rate,” he said in a meeting with President Duterte.
That is why, Duque said, there is a need to increase the bed capacity in public and private hospitals.
The Health chief, meantime, said that the surge in COVID cases was due to different factors such as the non-compliance to minimum public health standards.
He also cited the increase in the mobility of people, as well as the failure to immediately detect the active cases as reasons.
Duque said these were aside from the United Kingdom and South Africa variants among others.
On Monday, the DOH recorded 10,016 new cases of COVID, another record high.
