Pope Francis' appointment of Advincula was made public in Rome Thursday, March 25, at 12 noon (7 p.m. local time).

The bells of the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros continuously tolled on Thursday in celebration of Advincula's appointment.

Advincula replaced Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle.

The Archdiocese of Manila has been left “sede vacante” after Tagle assumed his Vatican post as prefect of Propaganda Fide in February last year.

Born on March 30, 1952 in Capiz, Advincula was ordained priest in 1976. He was appointed Bishop of San Carlos in 2001 and as Archbishop of Capiz in 2011.

Advincula is the Philippines ninth cardinal, following cardinals Orlando Quevedo, Luis Antonio Tagle, Gaudencio Rosales,

Jose Sanchez, Ricardo Vidal, Jaime Sin, Julio Rosales and Rufino Santos.

It was in October last year when the pontiff named Advincula as one of the 13 new cardinals and later appointed him as member of the Vatican's Congregation for the Clergy.
