NBI to probe deaths of Calbayog City mayor, 2 bodyguards


The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will probe the deaths of Calbayog City Mayor Ronald Aquino and his two bodyguards during an encounter with policemen last Monday, March 8.

Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra said the NBI should investigate because the other parties involved are members of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

PNP Chief Gen. Debold M. Sinas had already ordered an investigation into the incident.

“So, siyempre para objective and impartial ang investigation, I will direct the NBI today to investigate the incident (So, to have an objective and impartial investigation, I will direct the NBI today to investigate the incident),” Guevarra said.

The shooting incident took place along Laboyao Bridge in Barangay Lonoy at around 5:30 p.m. last Monday, March 8.

Reports stated that Aquino and his bodyguards were aboard a white van heading north when they were fired at by gunmen aboard two cars.

The bodyguards retaliated but they and the mayor died during the ensuing gunfight.
