There is growing concern that the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections has gone up in Metro Manila, but the Department of Health (DOH) has given an assurance that things are still under control.

And as the country’s vaccination program rolls on, stories on education, tourism and science are also highlighted this Saturday afternoon, March 6.

  1. The Department of Health (DOH) has acknowledged the upward trend in the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases being reported daily, but noted that the spike remained controllable.

  • “Lumakas ako.” Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said Saturday that he felt “stronger” and more confident to go outside and do his job as the country’s vaccine czar after he was inoculated with a coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine from China’s Sinovac Biotech.
  • The remaining 38,400 doses of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccines from British-Swede drug maker AstraZeneca will be delivered to the country on Sunday night, March 7, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. announced.
  • Four Philippine universities are among the world’s top 200 universities by subject, according to a list released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
  • The HEIs offering medical programs that have been allowed to hold limited face-to-face classes include the University of the Philippines-Manila (UP) and University of Santo Tomas (UST) both located in Manila; the Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) in Valenzuela; the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERM) in Quezon City; the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health in Pasig; and the St. Louis University in Baguio.
  • The Department of Tourism (DOT) expressed its support for the Sustainable Tourism Development Project (STDP) to be launched in Coron and El Nido in Palawan this year which aims to draw more visitors and hasten their tourism recovery.
  • Mount Pinatubo in Central Luzon remained under Alert Level 1 as the volcano continued to exhibit low-level unrest, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Saturday, March 6.The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) monitored several volcanic earthquakes in Taal and Kanlaon volcanoes in the past 24 hours.
  • The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has announced that the world’s only freshwater sardine which can only be found in Taal Lake has been successfully reared alive off site or away from its natural location. 
  • Young and potential Filipino nuclear scientists will soon be trained at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO) following the Philippines’ signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Australia’s nuclear agency on nuclear cooperation.

Ready-to-eat duck products, instant vegetable dishes, Kangkong Kropek, and Vacuum-fried Orange Kamote Buchi were among the 50 newly developed food products launched by the University of the Philippines- Los Baños’ Calabarzon Food Innovation Center (FIC) for both domestic and international markets.
