Vice President Leni Robredo said on Wednesday she was not hurt by President Duterte’s scathing remarks against her in a televised public address last Monday, March 1.
Speaking on “The Mangahas Interviews,“ Robredo addressed Duterte’s claim she has an angel’s face but a mind of the devil by saying she won’t stoop down to his level because it’s only a waste of time.
The President accused Robredo of “baiting“ him with the suggestion that he be the first to be vaccinated against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Robredo earlier said the President should be inoculated to encourage the people to get the jab.
Duterte said the vice president only wants to be relevant which is why she’s making such criticisms against him.
In response, Robredo said she was not hurt, but saddened by Duterte’s continuous tirades.
“Silver lining, at least he admitted I have an angelic face,” she said in jest. Turning serious, Robredo continued she would not stoop down to his level.
“Karapatan niyang sabihin kung anong nasa isip niya. Para sa akin, unbecoming ‘yun (He has right to say what is in his mind. For me, that’s unbecoming),” she said.
Robredo also believes in the saying that when you’re too sensitive, you will lose in an argument.
“Dapat sa trabaho namin, hindi kami napipikon eh, kasi sa trabaho namin, kailangan iyong tao malayang mag-criticize eh. Kailangan iyong tao malayang magbigay ng suggestions, kasi iyon iyong makakapabuti sa aming panunungkulan (In our line of work, we shouldn’t be too sensitive because in our work, we need to let the people criticize freely. The people need to freely give suggestions because that’s going to make us better),” she said.
The vice president also said that Duterte seems to easily lose his cool because he is not used to someone criticizing or opposing him.
But when the Chief Executive rejects criticisms and only listens to good things people say about him, he will not be aware of the shortcomings, Robredo added.
Over the weekend, Robredo made several remarks about how China’s Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine skipped a step in the approval process.
This earned the ire of the President who made her a target of his profanity-laced rant.
