The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will be the sole agency that will conduct a probe into the shooting incident involving police and anti-drug personnel, based on a latest order given by President Duterte.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said the President has issued the directive “to ensure impartiality” in probing the truth behind the incident.
“President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a probe on the shootout in Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City,” Roque said Friday, Feb. 25.
“The President likewise ordered the joint panel formed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) to discontinue their ongoing investigation,” he added.
On Friday night, the President held a closed-door meeting with top PNP and PDEA officials at the Palace after expressing concern over the reported misencounter between law enforcers. Senator Christopher Go and Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra also attended the meeting. A photo of the meeting was shared by the senator to the media.
The President earlier expressed “sadness and concern” over the shootout between the law enforcers in Quezon City Wednesday that left four people dead. Duterte vowed an impartial probe on the incident to ferret out the truth, and obtain justice for the victims, according to his spokesman.
A joint inquiry composed of police and PDEA personnel was recently formed to determine what transpired, and who should be held accountable for the incident.
