Tropical storm “Auring” has slightly decelerated on Sunday morning, Feb. 21, while moving towards the west-northwest direction, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

In its 8 a.m. severe weather bulletin, PAGASA said Auring had maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometer per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

At 7 a.m. Sunday, the center of Auring was estimated at 370 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, and moving in a West-Northwest direction at 10 kph.

The storm is forecast to continue moving generally west-northwestward to northwestward in the next 48 hours, but short-term erratic movement may still occur before its landfall over the Dinagat Islands-Eastern Samar (southern portion including Homonhon Island)-Leyte area between Sunday night or Monday early morning.

“There is an increasing likelihood that Auring will weaken into a tropical depression before it makes landfall due to persistent high vertical wind shear associated with the surge of the Northeast Monsoon,” PAGASA said.

“However, the possibility that the storm will maintain its strength until landfall is not yet ruled out,” it added.

After landfall, the storm may “weaken considerably due to significant terrain interaction and the increasing wind shear, leading to deterioration into a remnant low within 48 hours, possibly sooner.”

PAGASA said the combined effects of the surge of the Northeast Monsoon and the tropical storm will bring gale-force winds in areas under signal number 2 in the next 24 hours.

Strong breeze to near-gale conditions with occasionally higher gusts may affect areas where signal number 1 is in effect, as well as over Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Aurora, and the rest of Visayas and Bicol Region.

Rough to very rough seas will be experienced over the seaboards of areas under storm warning signal, as well as the eastern seaboard of Luzon not under any cyclone warning.

Rough seas will also prevail over the southern seaboard of Luzon, including the eastern seaboard of Palawan, the remaining seaboards of Visayas, and the northern, eastern, and western seaboards of Mindanao that are not under any cyclone warning.
