Vice President Leni Robredo remains unfazed by President Duterte’s insults, saying it is not for him to decide if she is capable to lead the country should she run for president in the May 2022 polls.

Robredo, an opposition leader, stressed the decision whether or not she is fit to lead lies on the Filipino people.

“If it’s the case, he’s not the one who will decide whether I’m qualified or not. It’s the people who will decide,” she said in Filipino during a press briefing Tuesday night, Feb 16.

The vice president was asked to react on Duterte’s latest tirade that she is not qualified to run for president as she knows nothing about foreign policy.

In a televised address on Monday night, Duterte fired back at Robredo for her “extortion” comments to his demand that the United States pay for the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the Philippines.

The Chief Executive even advised Robredo to take a refresher course in law. He also told the vice president she was not aware of her role in government.

Duterte ranted against Robredo despite the fact the latter has yet to mention any political plans for 2022.

Robredo said she was saddened by Duterte’s insults whenever she speaks her mind on government policies, but admitted it was beyond her control.

“I would not defend myself. But for me, it would be good to everyone if he listens, if he listens to suggestions, if he listens to other policies,” she said.

“Because the rest of the world, especially in this time of crisis, that the leaders who know how to consult, the leaders who know to admit their shortcomings, the leaders who know how to listen, who are more consultative, they come up with better response,” Robredo added.
