Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Monday awarded certificates to the 259 barangays that did not register any new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections in the past two months.

These barangays will each receive a P100,000 cash reward for hurdling Domagoso’s challenge to stay free of COVID-19 from December 1, 2020 to January 31, 2021.

“The barangays of Manila have shown it to the country that it can be done, that a barangay can be a COVID-free barangay,” Domagoso said in his speech during the city’s regular flag raising ceremony.

Of the 259 barangays, 32 have not logged new infections for four months straight after succeeding the first initial challenge for the period of September 1 to October 31, 2020.

A total of 73 barangays were able to meet the first challenge.

Domagoso said they challenged the city’s barangays for the second time because they saw how effective the program is in empowering barangays to join the fight against COVID-19.

He said that he might issue a third challenge if he finds enough funds to reward the barangays.

The local chief executive assured that the barangay officials will use the cash reward for the benefit of their constituents.
