Two moderately strong earthquakes measuring 5.5 and 5.4 magnitude on the Richter scale were recorded in Batanes and Zambales, respectively, on Thursday afternoon.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) detected the 5.5-magnitude earthquake around 4:14 p.m.
Its epicenter was traced 93 kilometers (km) northwest of Itbayat, Batanes.
Meanwhile, the 5.4-magnitude earthquake was documented at 3:48 p.m. and originated 125 km southwest of San Antonio, Zambales.
Both quakes were tectonic in origin, which means the tremors were caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
Phivolcs however did not provide intensity data for both tremors, as they were most likely unfelt by people near the quake’s epicenter.
