Leyte Representative Lucy Torres-Gomez has filed a resolution to congratulate Bren Esports after their recent win in the Mobile Legends M2 World Championships.

Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez

In filing her House Resolution No. 1524 last January 30, Torres-Gomez said the all-Filipino electronic sports team “made history as the first Philippine team” to win the global gaming tournament held in Singapore from January 18 to 24.

“With teams competing globally, Bren Esports is slowly gaining recognition in the region by winning various tournaments in multiple esports titles,” she added.

Bren Esports bagged the $140,000 (over P6.7 million) top prize in the Mobile Legends World Championship.

In the measure, the congresswoman also noted that the country’s esports industry saw a “phenomenal growth”, with the stoppage of several athletic activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the increasing use of Internet and online streaming platforms.

She said the competitive online gaming “carries a lot of career opportunities and develops among its players the same athletic qualities of discipline, commitment, and professionalism”.

“With the Philippines reaping this signal victory in spite of esports being a relatively new industry in the country, the Filipino youth could now look forward to the possibility of exploring professional gaming as an alternative gainful career,” Gomez added.
