Balanga Bishop Ruperto C. Santos, chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines -Episcopal Commission on Pontificio Colegio Filipino, has reminded the faithful to always speak the truth and say what is right.
“Always be reminded that we must always speak and say what is true, what is right, and what is moral,” Santos said over Radio Veritas.
The bishop issued his message during the recent observance of the World Day of Social Communication and the Feast of St. Francis de Sales, the patron saint of journalists, whose feast day was observed last January 24.
Santos said speaking the truth is the best way to stop the spread of fake news, particularly in social media.
“With the proliferation of fake news and the emergence of trolls, let us resort to always speaking the truth, search for truth, and make it prevail,” the Church leader said.
According to statistics, the country has one of the highest usage of social media in Southeast Asia with 67 percent of its population having access to the Internet, and spending an average of four hours per day.
“Let us pray that all of us will be responsible, conscientious, and sincere communicators to one another. Let us spread what is true to help stop the proliferation of fake news,” the bishop said.
