House committee OKs Quezon-Bicol Expressway project

LUCENA CITY – The construction of the Quezon-Bicol Expressway was approved by the House Committee on Public Works and Highways, according to the measure’s principal author Quezon third district Rep.Aleta Suarez.

Suarez said the Quezon-Bicol Expressway (QueBEx) will be a 220-kilometer highway that will extend from Barangay Malicboy in Pagbilao, Quezon, to the existing Maharlika Highway in San Fernando, Camarines Sur. The road segments will be Pagbilao, Gumaca, and Lopez bypass roads, as well as the one in San Fernando, Camarines Sur.

QueBEx will be one of the components of the ambitious Pacific Palisades Superhighway that will link Bicol to the Pacific Ocean-facing provinces of Quezon, Aurora, and Quirino, and on to Isabela and Cagayan.

Suarez said that the project was under the Duterte administration’s Build, Build, Build program, and is expected to spur travel from Quezon to the Bicol region.

She also underscored that travel will be faster and more convenient for motorists as QueBEx will go through four “poblacions”, and it will be an alternative to the circuitous and treacherous original route that traverses through the mountain side and other fragmentary roads.
