Eastern Samar jolted by magnitude 4.2 quake


A magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit the waters off Homonhon Island in Guiuan, Eastern Samar on Wednesday afternoon which was felt in nearby areas, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Based on Phivolcs' earthquake information bulletin, the epicenter of the quake was traced at 25 kilometers southeast of Homonhon Island at 2:53 p.m.

The quake had a depth of 39 kilometers and was tectonic in origin which was caused by ground shaking primarily due to the sudden movement in the Earth's plates, Phivolcs said.

According to the state seismology bureau, instrumental Intensities were in the following areas after the quake:

• Intensity II - Borongan City, Eastern Samar

• Intensity I - Surigao City

Phivolcs said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury from the tremor, while aftershocks are also not expected.
