Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Debold Sinas wants to have more graduates from the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) in order to address the shortage of officers in the police organization.

From the average of more or less 270 graduates per year, Sinas said they may push to increase the population to accommodate about 1,000 PNPA graduates per year.
“Probably in the future generations, there should be more graduates per year, probably 1,000 graduates per year which (would be) much better to fill up the shortage of officers,” said Sinas during his visit at the PNPA in Silang, Cavite.
He explained that the shortage of officers is a result of both mandatory and optional retirement, deaths and dismissal of officers from the service.
The PNPA is one of the major sources of PNP officers. While it is named PNP Academy, the graduating cadets also have the option to join the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
This was because the PNPA used to be under the supervision of the Philippine Public Safety College. Two years ago, the PNP assumed full supervision of the PNP when Republic Act 11279 was signed in 2018.
Sinas said they have been continuously monitoring the PNPA system, with the focus on discipline and leadership.
