Creator Inoue Takehiko teases, but no one knows if it’s a live-action or an anime film
If you grew up in the ‘90s, chances are you caught at least one episode of this basketball anime that aired first in ABC 5 (now TV5) and then later had reruns on GMA 7.
That’s right, we’re talking about Slam Dunk, you anime otaku you. So fans of this sports anime all got excited when its creator Inoue Takehiko teased on his Twitter that a film version of the classic basketball series is in the works.
No one knows for sure yet whether this upcoming film will be a live-action adaptation or a feature-length anime film. Nevertheless, fans are excited to relive the rivalry between Shohoku and Ryonan, as well as see again the funny characters of Slam Dunk.
It is our hope though that one dunk shot or free throw will no longer take 30 mins to finish, like how it was in the anime. Seriously though, details about the film remain scarce, but the official website for the film reveals that Toei Animation, which originally worked on the anime, is part of the production.
Slam Dunk first aired in 1993 and stayed on until 1996, when it was cancelled after 101 episodes. Fans were disappointed because there was a lot more to the series from its original manga that never made it to the anime. Perhaps this new film will continue where the anime series left off? We’ll see.
