Two newborn babies die of COVID-19 in Baguio, Apayao

BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) Cordillera reported on Wednesday, December 30, the death of two newborn babies due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) – one in Baguio City and one in Apayao province.

A newborn female reportedly died on December 29 in Baguio City due to Meconium Aspiration Syndrome, Asphyxia, Mild confirmed on COVID-19.

The City Health Service Office (CHSO) in the city also recorded 20 new cases, bringing the total number of active cases to 272.

The city has also recorded 3,498 recoveries, and 63 deaths from the 3,833 confirmed cases, as of December 30.

In Apayao, a newborn female in the town of Conner was recorded as the municipality’s 21st confirmed case, and the second COVID-19 related death in the province.

The infant was delivered by her mother via caesarian section (CS) at the Cagayan Valley Medical Center (CVMC) in Tuguegarao City last December 27 due to fetal distress with amniotic fluid, and found to be meconium stained.

The infant was subsequently intubated four hours after birth. 

On December 28, the baby was swabbed, but unfortunately expired at around 5:35 p.m. due to persistent pulmonary hypertension; Meconium Aspiration Pneumonia and COVID-19 confirmed critical. 

The mother was tested on December 30, and she yielded a negative result.

As of December 30, the province has already posted a total of 95 confirmed cases, with two active cases, 91 recovered, and two fatalities.
