CEBU CITY—The city will be one of the local government units (LGU) that will be prioritized in the distribution of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccines.

This was the assurance given by the country’s vaccine czar Carlito Galvez, said City Mayor Edgar Labella.

“I just talked to Secretary Galvez and he informed me that Cebu City will be prioritized once the vaccine is available,” Labella said in a press conference on Tuesday.

Labella said the city will be purchasing the vaccines to augment the doses that the national government will be providing to the city.

Labella said P500 million will be included in the 2021 annual budget for the purchase of the vaccines.

“We have to wait for the guidelines. I was told there has to be a tripartite agreement between the supplier and the city and national governments,” said Labella.

If possible, 100 percent of the city population will be vaccinated, said Labella. “It was said that only 70 percent of the community will be vaccinated just to have herd immunity. But if we can, we will have a 100 percent vaccination,” the mayor said.
