Brown-throated Kingfisher (Photo by Val Villanueva)

“We’re lucky to have moved to Sta. Rosa City from the asphalt jungle of Makati. Our house now is surrounded by verdant vegetation which thrives on an active creek located just outside our perimeter fence. Perhaps such condition makes our place habitable for different species of birds – Brown-throated Kingfishers, Collared Kingfishers, Bee-eaters, different types of sunbirds, Black-naped Orioles, Coucal, Magpie Robin, among others. For a camera enthusiast like myself, such is heaven sent. This prompted me to buy another camera suited for bird photography – Nikon Coolpix P1000 – which has served me well in photographing these birds. The tree where they usually perch is just right across our family room’s window (a no-brainer for me to mount my cam there). Nikon P1000’s focal length – 24mm to 3000mm – never misses a good shot. I’ve been exclusively using it almost every morning for birding and moon watching at night time; most specially during the lockdown where I couldn’t use my other DSLRs for outdoor photoshoots. I always shoot full-manual on RAW and auto ISO. My cam is mounted on Manfrotto tripod with a Benro Gimbal head. Exif: 1800mm, f/6.3, ISO 100. Taken on March 8, 2020, 9:42:59 a.m.” – Val Villanueva
