The announcement was made by Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Branded Television, on Dec. 2.

The move comes amid structural changes at Disney which has been reorganizing to place greater focus on Disney+ and Disney Channels.

Disney also attributes the closure to the "fast evolving media environment that provides more personalized music choices that ever to a generation of young consumers."

The company also noted how the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to affect in-person music events, played a part in the decision.

Radio Disney launched in 1996, helping a number of artists rise to stardom including Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift, Hilary Duff, and NSYNC.

The radio network owned 23 stations during its peak.

Radio Disney Country, which debuted in 2015 as a digital network, will also cease operations.
