Cagayan River floodwaters slowly recede

Floodwaters have started to slowly recede from the Cagayan River, including its major tributaries, Sunday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its flood advisory No. 2 issued Sunday afternoon, PAGASA noted that the "river trend of the Cagayan River is on recession at upper main Cagayan River, while middle and lower main Cagayan Rivers are still above alert level status" but have started receding at a very slow rate.

It said floodwaters from the upper Cagayan River and its tributaries Ganano and Magat are anticipated to remain within river banks, while water from middle and lower Cagayan River, including their tributaries, may only have slight flooding at riverside.

The Cagayan River basin had received significant rains from the northeast monsoon or "amihan" in the past few days and may continue to receive light to moderate amihan rains in the next 24 hours, PAGASA said.

PAGASA still advised the public and local disaster risk reduction and management councils within the river basin to take appropriate actions to mitigate the adverse impacts of possible river flooding; flooding due to the accumulation and ponding of rainwater combined with the effects of poor drainage systems; and possible landslides and flash floods in areas near or on mountains.

The amihan may also bring cloudy skies and rains over the Cordillera Administrative Region and the rest of Cagayan Valley, and partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains over Ilocos region and Central Luzon.

Meanwhile, the warm and humid easterly winds coming from the Pacific may bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao, and Davao region.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country may have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
