Rains may persist over Luzon, Visayas due to LPA

Light to heavy rains may persist over most of Luzon and Visayas in the next 24 hours due to the prevailing low pressure area (LPA) and tail-end of frontal system in the country.

As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) estimated the location of the LPA at 105 kilometers (km) east-northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar or 180 km east of Juban, Sorsogon.

PAGASA said the LPA is still less likely to intensify into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours but may bring rains over some areas as it moves close to the Northern Samar-Bicol region area.

The combined effects of the LPA and tail-end of frontal system, or the boundary between the cold northeast monsoon and warm easterly winds, may bring moderate to heavy rains over Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, and Kalinga on Wednesday.

Cagayan and Isabela have yet to recover from the devastation brought about by the recent massive flooding in the two provinces.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rain showers during thunderstorms may also affect Aurora, Quezon, Marinduque, Romblon, Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Masbate, and Visayas.

Occasional to frequent light to moderate rains will prevail over Batanes, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, and Mountain Province.

By Thursday, the LPA and the tail-end of frontal system will bring moderate to heavy rains over Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, and Kalinga and light to moderate with at times heavy rain showers during thunderstorms over Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Masbate, Aurora, Quezon, and Marinduque.

Meanwhile, occasional to frequent light to moderate rains will prevail over Ilocos Norte, Batanes, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, and Mountain Province.

PAGASA continues to warn the public against possible flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides that may occur during heavy or prolonged periods of rainfall, especially in areas that are identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards and in localities that received significant rainfall over the past couple of days or weeks.

Likewise, adjacent or nearby areas that may not experience heavy rainfall may still experience flooding due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels.

PAGASA advised the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned to take appropriate measures.

The tail-end of frontal system and the northeast monsoon or "amihan" may also bring some rains and thunderstorms over the rest of Northern and Central Luzon.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

A gale warning remains in effect on Wednesday morning due to the surge of northeast monsoon.

PAGASA said strong to gale force winds are expected to affect the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon, western coasts of Northern and Central Luzon, eastern seaboard of Luzon, and eastern coastline of Visayas.

As rough to very rough seas may prevail over these coasts, PAGASA advised fishing boats and other small boats not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels were asked to remain alert against big waves.
