Lawyer Warren Rex H. Liong has been appointed by President Duterte as the new Overall Deputy Ombudsman to help advance the government’s drive for good governance, Malacañang announced Thursday.

Liong will serve a term of seven years as deputy ombudsman based on the appointment paper signed by the President on Nov. 24, according to Presidential spokesman Harry Roque.

Prior to his appointment, Liong served as Director IV of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM)-Procurement Service.

“The Chief Executive in numerous occasions espoused the values of transparency, accountability and efficiency. We are confident that Mr. Liong similarly share these ideals as our quest for good governance remains unyielding and uncompromising,” Roque said.

“The challenges may be enormous but we are hopeful that Mr. Liong is up to the task to accomplish his mandate,” he added.

Liong assumes the post vacated by Melchor Arthur Carandang, who was dismissed in 2018 over alleged disclosure of information related to an investigation into the President’s wealth.

Liong previously served as member of the Philippine Reclamation Authority board. He also worked as legal consultant of Duterte when he was vice mayor of Davao City. He earned an accountancy degree from De La Salle University as well as a law degree from Ateneo de Davao University.
