Duterte OK with extension of Bangsamoro transition until 2025

Malacañang said President Duterte is willing to help amend the law that will allow the extension of the Bangsamoro transition period which is set to lapse in 2022.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque made the statement after the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) urged Congress to extend the transition period from 2022 to 2025.

In his Monday presser, Roque said that the President is willing to help in amending the law creating the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to extend the BARMM's transition period.

"Ang payo po ni Presidente kinakailangan batas 'yan dahil ang batas po ng eleksyon para sa BARMM ay nakaloob po sa batas (The President said there needs to be a law because the BARMM's election is stated under the law)," he said.

"Sabi niya tutulong siya para maamyendahan ang batas na 'yan pero kinakailangan talaga makipag-ugnayan ang mga taga-BARMM sa ating mga kongresista at senador (He said he will help amend that law but the BTA needs to coordinate with the lawmakers)," he added.

Last week, Roque said that the Palace would consider the request of the BTA.

The BARMM is created upon the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) in January 2019. It is the outcome of the government's years-long negotiation with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Currently, the BARMM is undergoing transition.

During the transition period, the interim Bangsamoro government will identify BARMM's structural framework while considering the existing structure, budget, and other relevant features of the now defunct-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

The transition period is set to end in 2022 once the new set of BARMM officials have been elected in political exercises.
