Makati police ensnare knife-carrying towing employee for alleged extortion

A knife-carrying employee of a towing company was arrested by policemen for extorting P10, 000 from a truck driver in Makati City on Wednesday (November 25), Assistant Chief of Police for Operations (ACOPO) Major Tyrone Valenzona said.

The suspect was identified as Dominic Panayo, 36, of Barangay Pio Del Pilar, Makati. He was apprehended on the complaint made by Benjie Ardagon, 28, of Dasmariñas, Cavite.

In a follow-up operation, a team led by Valenzona arrested Panayo on Omeña Highway in Barangay Pio Del Pilar, Makati at about 9:45 a.m.

When Panayo accepted the marked money, members of the police team swooped in.

The suspect reportedly tried to evade arrest and had to be pinned down after being “very defiant.”

Some of his accomplices managed to escape however. 

Upon frisking Panayo, investigators found a 10-inch kitchen knife and one live piece of CTC 40 mm ammunition on the suspect.

Captain Danilo Oamil, Makati Police Investigation Unit chief, said the victim’s truck (UYE 942), which had a burst tire along Osmeña, Highway, was hauled by the Parker Towing truck driven by Panayo at around 11 p.m. of November 24.

The victim said Panayo told him to pay P10, 000 or his truck will be impounded. 

“They should help him, not extort money from this poor driver. He had a burst tire, and he needed help. It is sad that there are people taking advantage of others’ misfortunes,” Valenzona said.

Ardagon sought the help of Makati Police so an entrapment operation was put in place.

Police are now conducting a follow-up operation to apprehend the suspect's cohorts.
