The opposition is completely stumped about the proposed Duterte-Duterte tandem in the 2022 presidential elections, according to Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo.

Panelo had earlier floated the idea of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio running for president with her father President Duterte as running mate in the next elections. He claimed the opposition won’t stand a chance against such powerful tandem in the upcoming presidential polls.

“Pag tumakbo na itong Duterte-Duterte, wala na (If the Duterte-Duterte tandem runs, it’s over),” he said during his “Counterpoint” program Friday.

“Di ba ninyo napapansin? Mula noon ibinigay ko ang ideyang ‘yun na baka tumakbo si Mayor Sara Duterte bilang presidente at si Presidente Duterte tumakbong bise presidente, na puwede naman, may narinig ba kayong reaksyon galing sa kaliwa o galing sa oposisyon? Wala. Wala kasi hindi nila malaman pano mag-re-react. Hindi nila akalain na puwede pala ‘yun (Haven’t you noticed? Since I gave the idea that Mayor Sara Duterte might run for president and President Duterte for vice president, which is allowed, have you heard any reaction from the left or the opposition? Nothing. Nothing because they don’t how to react. They don’t think that it is possible),” he said.

Panelo explained that Duterte is not prohibited from running for vice president in the next elections.

Except for seeking reelection, he said Duterte may run for lower elective post, similar to what then President Gloria M. Arroyo did. After her presidential term from 2001 to 2010, Arroyo served three terms as representative of the second district of Pampanga. She was elected House Speaker in 2018.

“Maraming nga…puwede pala tumakbo si presidente ng bise presidente. Puwede (Many realized that the President can run for vice president. Yes he can),” Panelo said.

“Kasi ang labag lang sa Saligang Batas, ‘yung Presidente na nakaupo after six years tatakbo uli ng presidente, hindi puwede ‘yun. Pero kung tatakbo siya ng ibang position, gaya ng bise presidente puwede ‘yun.  Tingnan ninyo si Presidente Gloria Arroyo, ‘di ba tumakbong congessman. Nanalo (Under the Constitution, the incumbent President cannot run for president again. But if the president will run for other position, like vice president, that is allowed. Just look at President Gloria Arroyo, she ran for congresswoman and won),” he said.

Last September, Panelo said he hopes the President will run for vice president while his daughter will seek the presidency in the 2022 elections. He expressed confidence about the chances of the Duterte father- daughter team the two if they decide to run for the country’s two highest government positions.

He noted the same situation happened in Davao City when Duterte served as vice mayor in the home city when his daughter was elected mayor from 2010 to 2013.

The President and his daughter have yet to comment on the matter.
