K-pop idol group BTS’ “Map of the Soul: 7” album has been certified platinum in the US after earning one million units.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) issued the platinum certification to “Map of the Soul: 7” on Nov. 16 simultaneously with a gold certification to the album.

According to RIAA’s rules, “each permanent digital album or physical album sale count as 1 Unit for certification purposes, 10 permanent track downloads from the album count as 1 Unit for certification purpose” or “1,500 on-demand audio and/or video streams from the album count as 1 Unit for certification purposes.”

RIAA issues album certifications based on the number of units earned. Gold is for 500,000 units, platinum for one million units, multi-platinum for 2 million units (and increments of one million) and diamond for 10 million units.

This is BTS’ second RIAA platinum certification and third certification overall for an album. “Love Yourself: Answer,” released on Aug. 24, 2018, was certified platinum on Jan. 16, 2020 after it was certified gold on Nov. 9, 2018. “Map of the Soul: Persona,” released on April 12, 2019, was certified gold by RIAA on Aug. 22, 2019.

Five singles by BTS have also been certified by RIAA. “Idol,” “Boy With Luv (feat. Halsey)” and “MIC Drop” have been certified platinum after each song earned one million units while “Fake Love” and “DNA” have been certified gold for getting 500,000 units.

According to RIAA, “each permanent digital download counts as 1 Unit for certification purposes” or “150 on-demand audio and/or video streams will count as 1 Unit for certification.”

“Map of the Soul: 7” was released on Feb. 21 this year and it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 200. It has sold 4.33 million copies as of October 2020, according to Korea’s Gaon Music Chart.

In August, Guinness World Records said “Map of the Soul: 7” earned the title for the best-selling album in South Korea with 4.26 million copies sold as of June 2020 to make “BTS the country’s best selling act of all time.”

BTS broke their own record under the same title. In June last year, Guinness announced that “Map of the Soul: Persona,” released in April 2019, was the best-selling album in South Korea with 3.39 million copies sold as of May 2019.

The platinum certification for “Map of the Soul: 7” came ahead of the release of BTS’ new album “BE” on Nov. 20.

On Nov. 17, BTS uploaded a teaser for the music video of “Life Goes On,” the main track of “BE.” The 26-second teaser has earned 8.26 million views in nine hours and 30 minutes after release.
