BUTUAN CITY – With the help of the information provided by a former New People’s Army (NPA) fighter, soldiers of the 23rd Infantry Battalion (23rd IB) were able to unearth an arms cache in the forested area of Sitio Sabang, Barangay Lower Olave in Buenavista town, Agusan del Norte.
Civil Military Operations (CMO) Officer Lt. Roel T. Maglalang told The Manila Bulletin on Monday that the former NPA rebel, whose name was withheld for his safety, was a member of Team Baking, Squad Dos, Sentro de Grabidad (SDG) Kingdom, Guerrilla Front 4-A (GF-4A), and a member of Squad 1, Sub Regional Sentro de Grabidad (SRSDG) Sagay, Sub Regional Command 3 (SRC3) of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP)-NPA North Central Mindanao Regional Committee.
He had surrendered to the government last October 12.
Recovered in the area that he pointed out were two caliber-.38 revolvers, five rounds of Ctg. 38 Revolver ammunition, and one pack bag.
The arms were reportedly buried by the withdrawing remnants of the NCMRC after an encounter Sitio Kawayan, Barangay Nong-nong, Butuan City, last April 27, according to 23rd IB Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Julius Cesar Paulo.
The 23rd IB commander extended his gratitude to the former NPA rebel for actively cooperating with the unit.
