President Duterte defended controversial cop General Debold Sinas from criticisms following his appointment as the new Philippine National Police (PNP) chief.
In a special presidential message uploaded on YouTube Saturday evening, Duterte said it was his call to appoint Sinas despite controversies and despite the charges he is facing due to his mañanita in May where quarantine restrictions were violated.
“Itong si General Sinas, chief PNP, akin ‘to (PNP Chief Sinas, he is my decision). This is my call,” he said.
“I take full responsibility but I also guarantee his competence and expertise in police work,” he added.
According to Duterte, he sees nothing wrong with the mañanita, and even if Sinas violated anything because of it, he was already pardoned.
“Wala akong nakitang kasalanan na masama na may moral implications, may masamang malisya, wala (I didn’t see anything bad wherein there were moral implications or malice. Nothing),” he said.
“Akin na yun. At kung may kasalanan man siya doon, pardon na siya (This is my decision. And if he did something wrong, then he is already pardoned),” he added.
President Duterte did not just defend Sinas by saying there was nothing he can do back then, he also defended the mañanita itself.
“‘Yang mañanita, it’s almost a religious ritual–nakaugalian na talaga ng mga Pilipino. Hindi kasalanan ng pobreng Sinas na ‘yan na pumunta sila doon. Hindi naman niya alam. Surprise. Eh alang-alang namang sipain niya doon? ‘Di kausapin niya (Mañania is almost a religious ritual–a Filipino practice. It’s not poor Sinas’ fault if they visited him. He didn’t know. It was a surprise. He couldn’t kick them out, He had to talk to them),” he said.
“Hindi naman kailangang maglabas siya doon ng mga mask pati ano (They didn’t have to wear a mask or anything)… Well, it was bad that it… yung mga pumunta doon hindi nila inisip (the people who went there didn’t think of what could happen). But then, sumusunod lang sila sa mga (they were just following)… almost a religious practice of mañanita,” he added.
Duterte said that Sinas was the better choice because he was not corrupt.
“Maliit na bagay yun. Kesa gustuhin yung mga corrupt. Diyan ako galit sa mga corrupt. Hanggang ngayon nasa labas pa (The mañanita is a small thing compared to those who are corrupt. I hate the corrupt ones. They are still out there),” he said.
“Si Sinas nagtatrabaho ‘yan. Nagpapakamatay ‘yan diyan trabaho (Sinas is doing his job. He is risking his life in his work),” he added.
