Twitter tests 'misleading information' warning when users try to 'like' a tweet containing misinformation

Twitter is testing a new feature to expand the use of its "misinformation" warnings on misleading tweets.

The microblogging site has developed a new feature, not yet live, that would pop up a "misleading information" warning when a user tries to "like" a tweet containing misinformation.

The new feature was designed by Hong Kong-based software engineer Jane Manchun Wong.

"Twitter is working on misinformation warning on likes, just like the ones for quote tweets / retweets," Wong wrote on Twitter.

According to TechCrunch, the new feature doesn't prevent users from continuing to like the tweet, but it slows them down.

Twitter earlier began labeling tweets that violated their policies against misleading information about civic integrity, COVID-19, and synthetic and manipulated media.

"In serving the public conversation, our goal is to make it easy to find credible information on Twitter and to limit the spread of potentially harmful and misleading content," Twitter said in a statement dated May.

Recently, the social networking service rolled out messages on its platform preemptively debunking false information about United States Election 2020.

Warnings were placed over tweets declaring premature victories and unverified claims.
