Police said Maganes was about to return to his family's residential compound when two men onboard a motorcycle arrived and riddled him with bullets. He died on-the-spot with six gunshot wounds.

The NUJP conveyed its deepest condolences to the family of Maganes and vowed to seek justice for him.

“Even as we mourn the loss of a colleague and extend our heartfelt sympathies to all those he left behind, the community of independent Filipino journalists shall not let his death be in vain,” the NUJP said in a statement.

“We will continue to seek justice for Vir and all our other fallen colleagues as we continue our struggle for genuine freedom of the press and of expression in our country,” it added.

Last November 8, 2016, Maganes survived a fatal shooting when a motorcycle-riding gunman fired at him as he was riding a tricycle.

Maganes was shot in the arm. It was earlier reported that he survived the attack after he played dead.

Authorities are still determining the motive for the killing.
