Cebu governor leads inter-island summit

CEBU CITY – Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia will spearhead an inter-island tourism summit on Nov. 27 in Bantayan Island, Cebu.

Garcia said Bohol Gov. Arthur Yap, Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo, and Siquijor Gov. Zaldy Villa will be invited to the summit to discuss plans that will help revive domestic tourism in the region.

The four governors were supposed to meet last August in Siquijor but it was postponed after some areas were locked down due to the pandemic.

“Actually, this is what I’ve been trying to push for. We could have this inter-province tourism program,” Garcia said.

Garcia said she will seek assistance from the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas to make the inter-island tourism summit possible.

“We are closely watching the thrust of our neighboring provinces and the other three governors. We do hope that perhaps we will be able to schedule a meeting so we could come up with a holistic and consensual tourism program that will benefit Central Visayas,” the governor said.

Aside from the summit, a mini Suroy-Suroy Sugbo, the province’s tourism program, will also be held on Nov. 28.

The mini Suroy-Suroy sa Sugbo will be held in time for the soft opening of the newly upgraded and renovated Bantayan Island Airport this November.

An 80-seat turbo-prop aircraft will have its maiden flight from Mactan Cebu International Airport to Bantayan Island Airport.
