Two matches to spice up PFL opening

The Philippines Football League will hold two matches for the opener of its shortened fourth season on Wednesday at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.

United City takes on guest club Azkals Development Team at 4:30 p.m. before Kaya-Iloilo battles newcomer Maharlika-Manila in the nightcap set at 8 p.m.

PFL games were supposed to start last Sunday with a tripleheader but were postponed after nine people inside the bubble in Seda Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna tested positive for COVID-19 while also taking into consideration the inclement weather caused by Typhoon Quinta.

All six clubs, including Stallion-Laguna and Mendiola FC, will play five matches during a two-week period of the Qatar Airways-sponsored competition at the PFF pitch.

Three matches will be held in each of the next four matchdays, according to the official website of the PFL.

Matches on Oct. 31 pit Stallion-Maharlika at 9 a.m, Mendiola-United City at 4:30 p.m. and Kaya-ADT at 8 p.m. while the schedule on Nov. 3 has ADT-Mendiola at 9 a.m., Stallion-Kaya at 4:30 p.m. and United City-Maharlika at 8 p.m.

Games on Nov. 6 are Kaya-Mendiola at 9 a.m., Maharlika-ADT at 4:30 p.m. and United City-Stallion at 8 p.m. before action return on Nov. 9 with Stallion-ADT at 9 a.m., Maharlika-Mendiola at 4:30 p.m. and United City-Kaya at 8 p.m.

The final match of the league season is on Nov. 12 between Stallion and Mendiola at at 4:30 p.m.

The team with the most number of points after the season will be declared as champion.

It will be the first-ever match for United City since changing its name following the transfer of ownership from Ceres to MMC Sportz while ADT will field unattached players from the national pool.

Kaya hopes to start off its campaign to finally win the league after back-to-back second place finishes opposite Maharlika, a team that was granted provisional license by the Philippine Football Federation several months ago.
