Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello hopes that those helped by the government to earn a living will someday will also pay forward to the needy.
“Sana huwag ninyo pabayaan ang trabaho ninyo (I hope you take good care of your jobs),” Bello told recipients of 850 free bicycles during the launching of the Free Bisikleta (FreeBis) project of the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) Monday.
“Balang araw yayaman kayo at balang araw kayo naman ang mamimigay ng bisikleta. Isoli ninyo ang konting negosyo na naibigay namin sa inyo (One day you will be rich and be able to help those in need. That is how you will return what the government gave you),” he said.
The project is intended to help workers displaced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Aside from the free bikes, Bello said recipients will also each get a mobile phone and load worth P5,000.
“Ang negosyo nag-uumpisa sa maliit. Wala namang negosyo na nag-uumpisa sa malaki (Businesses start small. There is no business that starts big),” he told beneficiaries of FreeBis.
“Basta mahalaga magsikap kayo, ayusin ninyo ang trabaho ninyo. At tiyak ko ang konting negosyo na binigay namin sa inyo ay lalaki (What is important is you strive, do your work well. I assure you that the small business opportunity we gave you will grow),” he said.
Meanwhile, the Manila city government thanked the DoLE for helping those displaced by the pandemic.
“Isang libong pamilya ang kakain dahil meron tayong isang libong gumagamit ng bisikletang ‘yan (A thousand families will eat because there are 1,000 persons who will use these bikes),” said Manila Administrator Felix Espiritu who graced the event on behalf of Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso whose mother had just passed away.
The beneficiaries of FreeBis are from the National Capiral Region (NCR), Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Bacoor City, Cavite; and Legazpi City, Albay.
Beneficiaries in the NCR will be able to use the bicycles as delivery riders of partner companies Grab and LalaFood while group beneficiaries will be assisted in their livelihood undertaking that will cater to the needs of bicycle commuters.
